Today was a busy day here at Brodnicki School and Room 117! I bet you all were exhausted when you left school today! First, we drew a picture of our Halloween costume and then wrote about it! Next, we wrapped our room parents up like mummies in our mummy game! Then, we played a great game of freeze dance! Boy, do we have some great dancers in our classroom! Finally, we went down to the gym and got to see all of our friends in all of the classes parade around in their costumes! We are a creative bunch here at Brodnicki School! After the parade, we came back to our classroom and did four different centers: 1) a food craft center, where we made ghost bannanas, pumpkin oranges, monster mouth cookies and drank slime juice!, 2) a pin the leg on the spider game, 3) pumpkin buckets and 4) Halloween BINGO with prizes! We were having so much fun that we didn't even want to change out of our costumes and pack up! See below for all of the fun that we had!

This year, Brodnicki School had an opportunity to host the Chicago Bear's mascot at one of our school assemblies, where the focus was on no bullying! :) The kids loved seeing Staley the Bear dance! Enjoy the pictures from the event!
Today, we met again with our buddies to read stories, find out the main character, and decorate our pumpkin to resemble the main character. The students had a blast and it was a fun and new way to learn about a book! Some pumpkins are still not finished, but the students were VERY creative! See all of the fun that was had today with pumpkin decorating in the pictures below!Be sure to check out the pictures from carving pumpkins (yesterday) if you haven't already done so!
Oh, we almost forgot to mention that we all enjoyed tasting the two types of pumpkin seeds that were made from our pumpkin carving yesterday! We all agreed that pumpkin seeds are very YUMMY! Today, the students got together with their buddies and got to carve pumpkins! It was so exciting because some of our students had never carved a pumpkin before! Ms. Maguire and Ms. Riplinger carved out the top of the pumpkin, so it was ready for us to clean out! The students were brave and reached right into the pumpkin, pulling out the pumpkin goop! We made sure we collected all of the seeds, though! Tonight, all of the seeds are being dried out and baked by Ms. Maguire and Ms. Riplinger! We will get to enjoy the deliciousness of the pumpkin seeds with our buddies! Tomorrow, we will read stories with our buddy, discuss the main character of the story, and decorate our pumpkins to look like the main character! Don't worry, moms and dads! We will have those pumpkins on display at the parent-teacher conferences next week! We can't wait for you to see what we have created! See all of the pictures below of all the fun we had!
On Wednesday, October 16, the first quarter of first grade ended! Wow! Be sure to keep update on what we are doing in class by reading our class blog and looking at our pictures of these fun activities! By the end of the first quarter, ideally, your child should be able to:
We have already made many, many, many memories so far in first grade and we have learned a lot of neat things! We have learned all of our short vowel sounds, many spelling patterns, how to make basic addition sentences, and how to use our sounds to form words and make a sentence! We have learned about pumpkins, how to be a good citizen, how not to be a bully, and more! We are also starting to learn about the different animal families in preparation for our upcoming zoo field trip! This upcoming quarter, we have a lot to look forward to:
I can't wait to see/ meet all of our Room 117 families at the upcoming parent-teacher conferences next week! Be on the lookout for photos from past school/ classroom activities. They will be posted within the next few days, and will include pictures from the Chicago Bears assembly and learning about America with our reading buddies!
We are having way too much fun in first grade! Our first quarter is coming to an end... can you believe it!? I can't believe how quick this school year is going!

Don't forget to have your child write Ms. Riplinger back in their student-teacher journal! It is so fun to read about everyone! Also, please remember that your zoo field trip permission form and money are due by October 18! Ms. Riplinger will discuss your student's academic progress more at our Parent- Teacher conferences on October 24 and 25, but by the end of first grade, your child should be able to: * Write a basic sentence using brave spelling. *Reading at a level D or higher. *Know the first 67 sight words from the first quarter. * Memorize and identify the 0-5 addition facts within two minutes (soon to be 1 minute). *Know what it means to be a friend. At the conference, Ms. Riplinger will tell you how your child is meeting the above first quarter goals. Please be on the look out for a reminder of your assigned conference time in your child's take home folder within the next few days. |
