It was the day that we were waiting for all year.... our Brookfield Zoo Field Trip! Prior to our trip, we had been learning about animal families. We read books, watched videos, had partner talks, created a book, and broke into research groups to look up facts about individual animal families. The students loved learning about this topic. There were a lot of pictures taken on this fun filled day, so enjoy the pictures below.

Children love Science and our students sure proved that with our pumpkin investigation. Ms. Riplinger gathered a few different types of pumpkins: small, large, orange, and green (yes, a green pumpkin!), and the students made predictions about the pumpkins. The formed a hypothesis about how similar and different all of the pumpkins would be. They also predicted if the green pumpkin would look the same or different than the orange pumpkin. We then made Venn diagrams before and after we cut the pumpkins open and discussed the results. Look at the pictures to find out what we learned.
Next, the students were able to get into groups and dig into the pulp of the pumpkin to dig out the seeds! October was filled with many learning opportunities with our reading buddies. In October, we learned about Christopher Columbus and wrote about what we would do if we found new land and we investigated ways to use our adjectives to describe apples through our 5 senses. We used those adjectives to create a web and then formed sentences in an apple template to talk about apples. Our reading buddies were a great help, since we are just starting to learn how to write! Our projects turned out great!
Firefighters came to our school to teach us about fire safety! They taught us through a very funny puppet show! We loved it! Now we know that we need to have a smoke detector in our house and not to use matches!
Ms. Krejci, our assistant principal, wanted a special way to thank our principal, Dr. Doogan during a special week to honor principals. She asked all of the students of Brodnicki School to write a special message or draw a special picture for Ms. Doogan on a Post It. She then collected all of the Post Its from the classes and covered Dr. Doogan's office with the Post Its as a surprise. When Ms. Doogan saw her office for the first time, she was very grateful to work at such a special school! Thank you, Ms. Doogan (And Ms. Krejci!). We love you both!
After Ms. Doogan saw her office, she invited classes down to see the final product! Brodnicki School holds an annual Grandparents' Bingo event, where all students and their grandparents are welcome to attend. The event is held at night, where there is dinner, refreshments, the book fair, and prizes. A few students from Room 117 attended, and they all had a very good time!
